Title: The Way Back

Artist: Lee, Kuei-Chih

Materials: Recycled wood, Video

Location: No.72, Yanping Rd., Xiluo Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan

Year: 2012

“Artist residency in Xiluo project”

I used discarded wood from the renovation of many old local houses as the primary material for this work. The piece is an organic sculpture that undergoes three stages of transformation within the same environment. Over a period of nine months, it shifts from an initial form resembling a temporary “shelter” commonly associated with travel, to a state akin to “flowing water,” and finally returns to the embrace of the “land” itself.

Through these changes in the fundamental materials that constitute a dwelling, the work emphasizes the idea of shelter as home. The meaning of “having once been here” grows alongside traces of memory and the surrounding environment, evolving and fading together with the cycles of history.
