“Artist residency in Xiluo project”
In 2012, during my residency in Xiluo, Yunlin, I discovered an abandoned plot of land at No. 68, Yanping Road. The site had once held a house, but after years of neglect, it had become what felt like a “time hollow” embedded within the lively old street—forgotten and disconnected from everyday life. Drawing from my own positive experiences with camping, I began to imagine transforming this neglected space into an artistic camping ground.
Together with residents, I initiated a process of “artistic land preparation,” inviting artists and community members to participate in reshaping the site. Gradually, the space was transformed into an open base that could provide travelers with a place to rest and stay, while also functioning as a platform for artistic creation and exchange. This project was named Camping Garden 68.
The main installation within the site was constructed as a natural sculpture using branches collected during land clearing and pruned tree limbs left after typhoons. Throughout the residency, I cared for the site like a gardener—preserving edible plants and removing weeds—allowing the land to regenerate naturally. Over time, native climbing plants such as wild bitter melon, Malabar spinach, and yams gradually covered the sculpture, transforming its original brown structure into vibrant layers of green and allowing it to merge seamlessly with its surroundings.
Within just eight months, more than twenty artists participated in activities and creations at the site. Camping Garden 68 evolved into a lively, almost magical hollow along Xiluo’s Yanping Old Street—a free, open space full of vitality and potential, a place where nature and creativity could continuously grow, and where dreaming was not only possible, but encouraged.
