2025 New Taipei Wetland Art Festival – “The Journey of Seeds”
In 1948, American ecologist Aldo Leopold completed his classic A Sand County Almanac. In one chapter, he described how the growth rings of a dead tree reveal histories across generations, reminding humankind to learn from nature. Through long-term observation and subtle interactions, he proposed the concept of a “land ethic,” rebuilding a new relationship between people and the land.
Growth rings are poetry silently inscribed in the heartwood of trees. Though voiceless, they faithfully record memories of storms and sunlight. This work takes “growth rings” as its central image, transforming nature’s rhythms into a poetic field that carries climate memory, hydrological change, and the breathing pulse of the wetland.
Constructed from pine wood and branches, the sculpture layers into concentric circles resembling an enlarged cross-section of a tree trunk. Each contour represents the life years of a tree and corresponds to subtle shifts in Earth’s climate. These engravings of natural language quietly accumulate and narrate within the wetland. At the work’s center blooms a flower, symbolizing the “heart” of the wetland—the core of life and breath.
Inside the rings, a “seed mandala” painted collectively by local participants is displayed, echoing this year’s theme, “Journey of Seeds.” Through shared participation, the imagery of seeds is embedded within the work, transforming it into a collective memory and vision.
This piece calls upon us to listen anew to the flowing journey of nature’s time. Through art as an interface, it invites us to rediscover our interwoven relationship with land, hydrology, and climate.
